Modern Edge Boutique – Kershaw, South Carolina

Three years ago (2013) I graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelors of Science in Sport Management. If you asked me in high school what my dream job was, I would’ve said to be a reporter for ESPN. In college, I would’ve said working in Community Relations for the Boston Red Sox or Carolina Panthers. Sports were (and still are) my passion, and I wanted to follow in my sister’s footsteps (she graduated from Winthrop and is killing it with the Panthers!)

But here I am, sitting in this beautiful, rustic, historical building that is Modern Edge Boutique. What a complete 360. My sport management classes were always full of athletes wearing their practice uniforms or workout gear, and then there I was wearing my cut-off jorts, boho top, & gladiator sandals or my designer jeans & ZTA t-shirt. I always stuck out like a sore thumb (or like the best dressed, whichever). I had a passion for sports, but there was nothing I loved more than shopping & planning my daily outfits. I even got best dressed for my 8th grade superlative, which is ridiculous because we wore uniforms… I have my sis and her closet to thank for that (always trying to follow in her footsteps).

My husband and I started dating in 2012. At the time, his mom, Amy, sold jewelry and a few accessories in the front of her salon and called it Modern Edge Boutique (modern jewelry with a touch of edginess). She later decided to offer a couple of dresses to customers and they didn’t even last on racks for a week, which is why Modern Edge branched out to selling apparel, as well. After graduation, I offered to help out at the boutique when I wasn’t working at USC-L. I modeled clothes and helped at the register, but the most help came from what I learned in my Sport Public Relations class: new media (or social media). Instagram was just starting up around this time too, so between IG and Facebook, our sales and customers increased dramatically!

For three years we continued selling clothes, jewelry, and accessories in the (very) small space in front of the salon (also the waiting area for clients). We began filling up the space so much that Modern Edge customers would be stepping on the toes of salon clients waiting for their appointment. Something had to change, and soon. We were doing so well with sales that we decided to expand. After a lot of thought, I decided that if we found a building, I would finally leave my 7-year job at USCL and run the boutique full-time.

By chance (by God), the building adjacent to the salon was going to be put up for sale, so we jumped at the chance for this perfect/convenient opportunity! In February of 2015, we purchased the old storefront next door. The historical building had been a jewelry & gift shop in the past, but most recently was a church. The walls: wood paneling. The floor: green carpet. The ceiling: very low, hideous tiles. We discovered original brick behind the paneling, we tore up the carpet and put down beautiful grey laminate, we raised the ceiling and added rough cut lumber (to name a few changes). After 8 very long months of renovations, ME opened the doors of it’s new location on October 9, 2015 (the day of Kershaw’s fall festival: Hog Jam).

One relocation, one renovation, numerous Christmas Open Houses, one Spring event, and four years later, Modern Edge is a thriving small business offering clothes, shoes, accessories, jewelry, and gift & home items. We have wonderful customers and a beautiful storefront, nestled in the heart of Kershaw, SC. I am so proud of how far ME has come. We have put so much blood, sweat, tears, heart, and soul into this building and business and I am so blessed to be a part of it. Spending almost 40 hours a week here can get really exhausting, but I love what I do and I love being responsible for offering trendy & affordable items to this growing small town! I love working in this beautiful store and talking to people of the town every day. I love taking pictures and modeling clothes (although from now until August I’m off limits in the modeling department). I love looking at the latest fashion trends and picking out items to order. And living walking distance from work isn’t that bad either! I am so thankful and blessed that I get to do what I do! I can’t wait to see what God has in store for Modern Edge!
